So, you’re ready to elevate your smile with a piece of custom tooth jewelry? Welcome to the club. But before our master craftsmen can cast your solid gold or diamond-encrusted grillz, we need one crucial thing: a perfect mold of your teeth.
Don’t worry—you don’t need a dental degree to do this. Our at-home DIY mold kit is engineered to be simple, fast, and foolproof. Follow this step-by-step guide to ensure your custom piece fits like a glove.
Phase 1: Preparing Your At-Home Mold Kit
When your kit arrives, unpack it and ensure you have:
- Two colors of impression putty (Base and Catalyst).
- Upper and/or lower dental impression trays.
- A mirror (highly recommended).
⚠️ CRUCIAL BEFORE YOU START: Brush and floss your teeth thoroughly. Any leftover food particles can ruin the accuracy of the mold. Also, make sure your hands are washed and completely dry.
Phase 2: Stepping Through the 3-Minute Molding Process
Timing is everything. Once the two putties mix, they begin to harden quickly (usually within 60–90 seconds). Read all steps before opening the containers.
Step 1: Mix the Putties
Take one colored putty and one white putty. Roll and knead them together vigorously using your fingertips until the color is completely solid and uniform with no white streaks left. Do this within 30 seconds.
Step 2: Shape and Load the Tray
Roll the mixed putty into a smooth log shape. Place it evenly into the dental tray, making sure it fills the tray from end to end.
Step 3: Bite & Hold Still
Open your mouth wide, center the tray over your teeth (top or bottom), and push it straight up (or down) with your thumbs. Press firmly until your teeth press deeply into the putty.
- Tip: Ensure your lip goes over the outside of the tray to capture your gum line.
Step 4: Wait for the Set
Hold the tray completely still in your mouth for 3 full minutes. Do not wiggle, talk, or bite down further. Relax and let it harden.
Step 5: Gently Remove
Gently wiggle the tray down (or up) to break the suction, then pull it straight out. Do not remove the hardened putty from the plastic tray! Rinse it with cold water and let it air dry.
Phase 3: How to Know If Your Mold is Perfect?
Before you ship it back to us via our free FedEx pickup, do a quick quality check:
- The “Yes” List (Perfect Mold): You can clearly see the sharp outlines of all your teeth, including the gum line. The putty looks smooth and completely mixed.
- The “Oops” List (Redo Needed): The mold looks smeared (caused by moving the tray), teeth pierced all the way through to the plastic tray, or there are large marble streaks of white putty.
If you think you messed up, don’t panic! Contact our support team (support@custommygrillz.com) before shipping, and we will guide you on using the backup putty.
Phase 4: Receiving & Installing Your Final Grillz
Once we receive your perfect mold, our team takes 20-25 days to design, craft, and polish your jewelry. When it arrives at your doorstep, here is how to wear it:
- Mirror Check: Wash your hands and your new grillz with warm water (never boiling water).
- The Click Fit: Align the grillz with your teeth and press upward/downward gently. A premium, custom-engineered grillz should slide on smoothly and sit snugly with a subtle “snap” sensation.
- Adjusting the Prongs (If applicable): If it feels slightly loose or too tight, look at the hidden back prongs. You can use your fingernail to gently push them inward for a tighter grip, or outward for a looser fit.
Now, look in the mirror, smile big, and let 36 years of fine jewelry craftsmanship shine on your teeth.
